Banana Day, celebrated around the world on April 17th, is a great opportunity to get educated about this fabulous fruit, ideal for anything from fruit salad to smoothies to banana bread. So, grab a banana, and let’s begin.

Banana-Latex Connection

Watch out if you’re allergic to bananas, since you might be sensitive to latex, too. It turns out that about half of latex-sensitive folks share a banana allergy, all thanks to tricky proteins hiding inside.

Banana Varieties

There’s a lot more than one kind of banana! With over 1000 types divided into 50 groups, there’s a unique banana for every palate—from the Cavendish to the Gros Michel.

Heart-Healthy

They’re not just tasty: Research reveals that regularly eating potassium-rich bananas can help against stroke and heart attack risks. They keep your arteries in top shape by fighting stiffness.

Slippery Science

Ever wondered why bananas are so slippery? In 2014, a physics team won an Ig Nobel Prize for finding the answer to this question. Apparently, the slipperiness comes from the polysaccharide molecules in the peel.

Monkey Business

Monkeys have a totally different banana-peeling playbook compared to humans. Instead of our top-down approach, they go upside-down for easier peeling. Might be worth trying!

If you thought bananas were only meant for peeling and munching, think again. This versatile fruit has so much more to offer than meets the eye, and we’re about to tell you exactly what they are. If you’re looking to up your banana game (yes, that’s a thing), here are three scrumptious and creative ways to enjoy this tasty yellow fruit.

Banana Smoothie

First up, we have the classic and ever-so-satisfying banana smoothie. Blend together a ripe banana, a splash of milk (or your favorite dairy-free alternative), some yogurt, and a handful of ice. You’ve now got yourself a creamy and refreshing treat that’s perfect for breakfast or as a midday pick-me-up.

Banana Pancakes

Next on our banana adventure is the mouthwatering banana pancakes. Mash up a ripe banana and mix it with an egg, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a dash of vanilla extract. Heat up a skillet, pour the batter into small circles, and cook until golden brown on each side.

Grilled Bananas

This one is probably least known, but it’s still darn good. For grilled bananas, slice a ripe banana lengthwise and place it on a preheated grill or stovetop grill pan. Grill for a few minutes on each side until caramelized and slightly charred.

Do you remember being a child, and how much fun it was to make your own snacks and express your creativity? Do you remember building things or telling stories as a child, again, expressing your creativity? To help pass those fun memories on to your own children, try out this fun snack you can make with them.

The banana boat requires a boat, a mast, a sail, and a crew.

For these, you’ll need:

  • A banana (the boat)
  • Melon, cut into a triangle (the sail)
  • Chocolate chips (the crew)
  • A toothpick (the mast)
  • Peanut butter (to glue it together)

Instrauctions:

In technicality, this is very simply a snack of banana with peanut butter and chocolate chips. But we’re going to make it more than that by building a “boat” out of the ingredients.

Start by cutting a ridge through your banana long ways, so that you’re left with a fault line wide enough for a crew running down the banana. Next, fill the fault line with peanut butter.

Now, attach the sail to the mast by skewering the triangular melon on the toothpick. Then stick the toothpick upright into the banana, thus giving your boat a mast and a sail.

Finally, add the chocolate chip crew. Encourage the kids to tell a story with these materials—who’s in the crew, where they put each of them, and why are they out at sea? This way kids have a little more than just a snack that they’ve created—they’ve created a story.

Finally, eat the boat!

Peanut butter and jelly is the classic combination that we all know and love. But did you know that there are other great ingredients to combine with peanut butter?

Here are five recommendations for great additions for peanut butter sandwiches that aren’t jelly.

Banana

Peanut butter and banana pair perfectly together. The sweetness of the banana and the saltiness of the peanut butter go so well together.

Nutella

Nutella and peanut butter? Yes, please. These two nut-based spreads are a combination made in heaven.

Honey

If you aren’t afraid of something sweet, try a peanut butter and honey sandwich. Don’t put too much honey on the bread, however, or it might be overwhelming.

Apple

If you’ve ever tried dipping apple slices in peanut butter, you’d know how great this combination is. I recommend tart, green apples with peanut butter, to counteract the sweet saltiness of the spread.

Avocado

This combination might seem odd at first, but trust me, it really works. In addition, both peanut butter and avocado are rich in healthy, unsaturated fats that are great for heart health.

Next time you reach for strawberry or grape jelly to eat with peanut butter, think outside of the box and try something different! You’d be surprised by how many things go well with peanut butter.

Banana bread is one of my favorite recipes to make for a breakfast treat. Using bananas as the base for a sweet bread that can be enjoyed with all kinds of personalized additions, it’s a favorite for families throughout the United States.

Here are some of my top tips for making a good batch of banana bread.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1B_tc8l7qS/

Use Overripe Bananas

This is one thing that is absolutely crucial for banana bread: do not use green or even yellow bananas! In order to produce the sweetness and smooth consistency that banana bread is known for, you have to use overripe bananas.

Go With Brown Sugar

Instead of white sugar, why not try brown sugar the next time you make banana bread? It yields a richer and more caramelized flavor that imparts a beautiful brown tone on the bread that looks downright tasty.

Put Some Milk in the Batter

You can ensure that your banana bread won’t be dry if you add a little bit of whole milk or buttermilk into the batter. The result will be a moist and decadent banana bread.

Walnuts are a Perfect Addition

Plain banana bread is good, but adding chopped walnuts into the batter and turning it into banana nut bread makes a special treat that you’re guaranteed to fall in love with.
