Here’s How to Make Hand Rolls at Home

Hand rolls, also called temaki sushi, are sushi rolls that you can make, well, by hand. It’s a great place to start with making sushi at home, as it doesn’t require any specialized equipment or anything. It’s so simple and still results in delicious sushi. Sound good? We think so, too. Here is how to make it.

Ingredients

  • Sushi rice
  • Rice vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Nori
  • Sushi filling of your choice (raw fish, veggies, sauce, etc.)

Directions

First, you’ll want to make a batch of sushi rice. If you’ve never done this before, it might be a bit tricky, but it’s easy to learn. Just rinse, drain, and cook the rice (ideally in a rice cooker), and then dump it out into a large container to cool. Flatten the rice out, and pour a mixture of vinegar, sugar, and salt over it. Mix and cover with a damp towel while you’re not using it.

To make the hand rolls, put a scoop of sushi onto the left half of a piece of nori. Spread into an even layer and then add your chosen filling on top. Roll from the bottom left corner upward into a cone that you can hold in your hand. Enjoy!
