Is It Only Me Or Pineapple Burns Your Mouth Too?

When I eat pineapple, it does not matter if it’s a small or a big amount, the roof of my mouth and the sides of my tongue burn and become itchy. Are you familiar with this feeling?

Why is it like that?
Pineapples contain a plant protease enzyme called Bromelain. Bromelian leads to a prickly sensation in the mouth when consumed. The enzyme is present in all parts of the pineapple but is more concentrated in the hard piece, middle of the fruit. The Bromelain is digesting the tender skin inside of your mouth.

People usually think they are the only ones to feel this sensation and therefore think they are allergic. This is not so true. It is a known feeling and it is something you can avoid. For example, when cooking a Pineapple this feeling will disappear. You can also avoid it by cutting out the gem (the hard part in the middle) of the pineapple.
