Preserve Your Apples using These Tricks

Apples are seasonal fruits, and this means that you’ll need to preserve them for later. Artificial methods of preservation are not recommended because of their adverse effects on the body. Here are some tricks to preserve your apples:

Picking the right apples

Smaller apples with thicker skins are easier to preserve. These apples can be stored for up to four months instead of two. These apples are also tastier than those with thin skins.

Care for them like eggs

It would help if you were more gentle with apples because a single bruise can spoil the bunch. When apples are bruised, the ethylene is emitted faster, and this can affect all the other apples around. Even though apples look tough, be gentle with them.

Reduce temperature

Apples are stored at low temperatures, particularly from 35 degrees. They do not like to be cold. At 29 degrees, your apple may start to freeze. It is better to store it in a beer fridge in your basement, preferably one you don’t open often. If you don’t have a beer fridge, then store the apples in a crisper drawer without any other veggies or fruits.

Add humidity

Grocery stores add humidity to keep apples fresh. You may not have this mechanism in place, but you can use a damp paper towel to cover them or keep them in a plastic bag. Be sure to poke some holes into the bag to allow the ethylene gas to escape.
