If we mention the word “squid” to you in a culinary context, the first dish you’ll probably think about is fried calamari.

One of the most popular seafood dishes in the world, this squid preparation is a classic and for good reason. Dipped in an egg wash and then covered in a batter and fried in hot oil, fried calamari is loved throughout the world and for good reason.

There are a ton of other ways to enjoy squid, though.

One of our favorite ways to eat squid is when it is sautéed with onions and peppers. While you might be surprised by eating squid which isn’t fried, the sautéing technique used in preparing this type of squid allows for a product which is soft and not chewy, while the onions and peppers add a delicious savory twist to the dish.

A popular way to enjoy squid in Spain is another delight which is known as calamares en su tinta, which translates to “squid in its own ink.” While you might squirm at the first sight of this jet-black dish, you’ll be surprised at just how good it is.

Squid ink is savory and salty, and it gives squid dishes a richness that many others just don’t have. You might be surprised at how much you like it.
