Making cake isn’t usually that hard, but one of the more challenging parts is making it look good. After all, even a pre-bought frosting won’t make decorating your cake any easier. And even the most delicious cake can feel like a bit of a let-down when you mess up the frosting. So to make sure your cake looks as good as it tastes, here are some frosting tips.

Use an Offset Spatula

If there’s one thing that will make your life easier when frosting a cake that is worth investing a few dollars in, it’s an offset spatula. This tool is nearly indispensable when frosting cakes, so go ahead and get one.

Never Frost a Hot Cake

There is no bigger frosting mistake you can make than frosting a hot or warm cake. So let your cakes cool completely before you even think about putting a dollop of frosting on them.

Use a Crumb Coat

You know how when you frost a cake, crumbs get all up in the frosting and it doesn’t look too good? Yeah, do that on purpose with a thin layer of frosting, chill, and then do another layer of frosting over that will actually be visible. It’s called a crumb coat and it’s a very important frosting step.
