How many times have you tried drinking orange juice right after you’ve brushed your teeth in the morning, only to realize that it tastes awful?

Bad-tasting food after brushing our teeth is something we have all experienced, but why does it happen?

The main reason for this is sodium laureth sulfate, a toothpaste ingredient that’s basically a detergent. It can also be found in soaps, shampoos, fabric softeners, and other products you use daily. Because of it, there’s a foam created when you brush your teeth, which helps you spread it more evenly.

What happens after you use a toothpaste with this ingredient is that the taste buds that perceive sweetness don’t work very well. That’s why you will only feel the bitter taste of some food and drinks, which is usually covered by the sweetness.
