Whether you call it puppy chow, muddy buddies, or monkey munch, I call this concoction of crispy C, peanut butter, chocolate and powdered sugar delicious. I mean, seriously—what’s not to love? If you have no idea what I’m talking about then buckle up buttercup, because your taste buds are in for a treat.
Start off with the basics. Five ingredients are all it takes to make the classic puppy chow that’s a hit with both the ankle biters and the young-at-heart. Then mix it up with a couple of our favorite variations. Trust me, you won’t regret it. Unless you don’t make enough.
Classic, Crunchy Puppy Chow
9 cups Chex (or similar) cereal
1 cup chocolate chips
½ cup peanut butter
¼ cup butter
1 ½ cups powdered sugar
Pour cereal into a large bowl and set aside for now. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Melt the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter together, then pour the chocolate mixture over cereal and mix well with hands, using gloves or a wooden spoon.
Place your cereal mixture into a large baggie and pour the powdered sugar over. Close tightly and shake bag well to coat the cereal. Spread out on a cookie sheet to cool.
Cake Batter Puppy Chow
4 cups Chex cereal
8 oz, white chocolate chips
2 Tablespoons, butter
½ teaspoon, almond extract
½ teaspoon, butter extract
¾ cup powdered sugar
¾ cup white cake mix
1 cup rainbow sprinkles
Pour cereal into large bowl. Add powdered sugar and cake mix to the gallon-sized baggie. Heat chocolate, butter, and both extracts on low heat until melted, stirring constantly so the bottom doesn’t overcook.
Pour chocolate mixture over cereal, mixing for about three minutes, being careful not to break the cereal pieces. Add sprinkles to the mixture and stir to combine. Pour cereal into the bag and shake until coated in sugar. Spread out on a cookie sheet to cool.
Cookies & Cream Puppy Chow
5 ounces white chocolate chips
5 ounces milk chocolate chips
5 cups Chex Cereal
1 tsp shortening
Oreo cookies (8 for crushing and some for putting pieces throughout)
1 cup powdered sugar
Divide the Chex cereal into two bowls, with 2½ cups in each. In a food processor, crush eight Oreos until fine. You can also crush in a gallon size bag with rolling pin.
In two gallon sized bags, add ½ cup powdered sugar into each bag with ½ of the crushed Oreos into each bag. Set aside.
Melt the white chocolate and milk chocolate in separate microwave safe bowls. Melt 30 seconds at a time with ½ tsp shortening in each stirring after each 30 seconds until melted.
Once melted, stir in the chocolate into the separate bowls of Chex cereal until the Chex are coated well with the chocolate.
Add the white chocolate and milk chocolate separately to the gallon sized bags with powdered sugar and crushed Oreos and shake until they are coated. Then add some extra crushed pieces to the mixture at the end.
