Have you ever been in the situation where you were ready to start cooking dinner and you realized you were out of breadcrumbs? Breadcrumbs are a pantry staple and they’re used for binding meatballs and meatloaf as well as breading chicken and fish. The next time you run out of breadcrumbs, don’t sweat it as these substitutions work just as well, and you may even end up liking them better!
Cereal
Cereals like cornflakes, Rice Crispies, rice or corn Chex, and Wheaties work well as substitutions as they’re not too sweet and they their texture mimics breadcrumbs. If you want something a bit sweeter, you can use Captain Crunch or Kix.
Pretzels
Pretzels can be used as a coating on fish or chicken or as a binding agent for meatballs and meatloaf when they’re processed until they’re fine. They add a nice saltiness and crunch to the dish.
Nuts and Seeds
Cashews, peanuts, almonds, sesame seeds…the list goes on and on for the nuts and seeds that make amazing, crunchy coating for fish fillets or chicken breasts.
Potato Chips
Potato chips are already seasoned and there are so many varieties like salt and vinegar, barbecue, and sour cream and onion that you can use as coating or binding agents.
Crackers
For meatballs or meatloaf, next time you run out of bread crumbs, try using crushed Saltines or Ritz crackers.
