Each year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases the “Dirty Dozen,” a list of fruits and vegetables with the highest levels of pesticide residues. The aim is to inform consumers about which produce might be worth buying organic to minimize exposure to harmful chemicals. The 2024 Dirty Dozen list is out spotlighting some favorites. Here’s what you need to know about this year’s lineup.
Top Offenders
Strawberries and spinach lead the pack, with strawberries notorious for multiple pesticide residues, and spinach containing high levels of contaminants. These are closely followed by kale, collard, and mustard greens, making leafy greens a category consumers should be cautious about.
Fruity Concerns
The fruit section sees the usual suspects with grapes, peaches, nectarines, apples, cherries, and blueberries all making the list. Their common issue is their thin skin, which poorly protects them from absorbing harmful chemicals. Peaches and nectarines, with their delicate surfaces, are particularly susceptible. Swapping for organic versions might be worth the extra dollars.
Vegetable Alerts
Beyond leafy greens, bell, and hot peppers, along with green beans, have been identified as carrying significant pesticide residues. The thin skin of peppers and the new addition of green beans to the list suggest a closer look at these vegetables when shopping.
