Fried green tomatoes are an iconic Southern staple, which is also so delicious and easy to make. Some people prefer them as a side dish, others like them as a starter, putting a little bit of mayo on some bread with fried green tomato slices piled high. However you eat them, you definitely won’t be disappointed by this classic Southern dish.

Recipe

This recipe works best if you have a garden with unripened tomatoes, but if you don’t you can go to the farmers’ market or grocery store to find green tomatoes.

  1. Wash and slice 4 tomatoes into about 1/2 inch slices.
  2. Heat up some vegetable oil in a skillet on medium heat while you prepare the dredging station.
  3. In a bowl, whisk 2 eggs together with 1/2 cup of the milk of your choice.
  4. On one plate put out about 1 cup of flour. If you want to make it spicy, you can add a little cayenne pepper to it.
  5. On another plate, mix 1/2 cup of cornmeal and 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs along with 2 teaspoons of salt and a pinch of pepper and mix those together.
  6. First, dip the tomatoes into the flour, then the egg, and finally into the cornmeal and into the fryer.
  7. Fry on each side until golden and drain them on paper towels.
  8. Enjoy!
