Pop rocks are a classic American candy made with sugar, lactose, and flavoring. The effect this candy has when it hits your tongue is an unmistakable popping sound. What most people don’t know is that you can make them at home easily! Surprise your friends and family with this awesome recipe!
Ingredients and Tools
The most technical piece of equipment you’ll need for this recipe is a candy thermometer. The other ingredients and tools you will find around your house, like sugar, corn syrup, food coloring and baking soda. You will also need citric acid, but you can find it in most grocery stores. You can also add flavoring at the end, but that’s optional.
Method
- Combine in a saucepan sugar, corn syrup, and water. Cook until a candy thermometer reads 300 degrees, and take it off the heat.
- Add baking soda, citric acid, and food coloring, and stir to combine.
- Dust a sheet pan with cornstarch and pour the mixture on top of it to cool for 30 minutes.
- Once it’s cooled, break the candy apart and put into a plastic bag. With a rolling pin, crush the pieces so they break into small enough pieces like you find at the store.
