Try this recipe for homemade tortilla chips and elevate your taco nights to a whole new level of deliciousness. Making your own tortillas from scratch is not only satisfying but also surprisingly simple. Here’s how to make them.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup of warm water
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted lard
Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt until well combined. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the warm water and vegetable oil or melted lard.
- Stir the mixture with a wooden spoon or your hands until a shaggy dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal-sized portions and shape each portion into a ball. Cover the dough balls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rest for about 15-20 minutes.
- After the dough has rested, heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each dough ball into a thin circle, about 8 inches in diameter.
- Carefully transfer the rolled-out tortilla to the hot skillet and cook for about 30 seconds to 1 minute on each side, or until golden brown spots begin to form. As each tortilla cooks, transfer it to a plate and cover it with a clean kitchen towel to keep it warm. Serve the homemade tortillas warm with your favorite fillings and toppings.
