This is an Easy Shortcut to Delicious Greek Kataife

Kataife is a Greek dessert that’s in the family of baklava. It uses the same kind of pastry called filo but is shredded and tossed with nuts and covered in a sweet syrup.

This dessert can be made even more easily than baklava by this awesome shortcut. Instead of using filo, which is very finicky, you can use shredded wheat cereal instead! The consistency is very similar and it’s sure to save you a lot of time and energy.

For this shortcut kataife, you will need:
3 pounds of shredded wheat cereal
6 cups of finely chopped walnuts
2 teaspoons of cinnamon
1 1/2 pounds of melted butter
6 cups of sugar
3 1/2 cups of water
the juice of 1 whole lemon

Recipe

  1. Start by preheating an oven to 300 F and greasing a baking dish.
  2. Spread 1 1/2 pounds of the cereal on the bottom of the dish and pour over 3/4 pound of melted butter on top.
  3. In a small bowl, mix together the nuts and the cinnamon and layer it on top of the cereal.
  4. Add the rest of the cereal and pour over the rest of the butter and bake for 45 minutes.
  5. While it bakes, combine the sugar, water, and lemon in a pan for 20 minutes or until the sugar dissolves.
  6. Once it’s cooled, pour it over the kataife and serve!
