Mashed potatoes are one of the easiest dishes to make, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to make mistakes when cooking them. If your mashed potatoes aren’t as delicious and fluffy as you want them to be, here are a few common mistakes that you’re probably making.

Potato Type

Not all potatoes are created equal, especially when it comes to making mashed potatoes. If you want your dish to be perfectly fluffy, always go with starchy types of potatoes.

Hot Water

Many people try to rush the cooking process by adding their potatoes to boiling water, but this shortcut won’t do you any good. The insides of your potatoes may end up undercooked if you’re using hot water.

No Salt

If you don’t have a habit of salting your potatoes because you can just do it later, it’s time to start. Your mashed potatoes will taste much better because they’ll absorb the water that they’re cooked in.

Too Cold

If you’re adding butter, cream, or milk to your mashed potatoes, give them some time to warm up after getting them out of the fridge. Using them cold won’t do you any favors because you’ll have trouble mixing them up.
