Black Treacle Is Fall’s Favorite Ingredient

Think of fall, and you may conjure up images of steaming desserts, warm cream, custard and hot, spiced drinks. One of the most versatile and potent ingredients to use at this time of year is black treacle – thick, sweet, yet bitter, this will really add a depth of flavor to sweet and savory dishes.

Black Treacle Bacon

Ingredients (to serve 4):

  • 8 rashers of bacon
  • 1 tablespoon of black treacle
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Heat the butter, treacle and cinnamon in a pan. Once all are well combined, pour a little of this mix into a frying pan and use it to fry the bacon in.

Black Treacle Warmer

Ingredients (to serve 4):

  • 2 cups of milk
  • 1 tablespoon of black treacle
  • 1 teaspoon of maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 2 shots of whisky (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Place all of the ingredients into a pan and warm through.
  2. Whisk using a handheld milk frothier before serving.

Black Treacle Cookies

Ingredients (to make 12):

  • 1 cup of plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 cup of caster sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of black treacle
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons of milk

Instructions:

  1. Mix together the flour, sugar and baking powder in a large bowl.
  2. Add the butter, stir through until the mix resembles breadcrumbs.
  3. Whisk in the eggs and milk.
  4. Stir through the black treacle.
  5. Knead and shape into cookies before placing on a lined baking tray and baking at 320 degrees for 15 minutes.
