Are you planning to make a trip to Kyiv, Ukraine in the near future? This Eastern European capital might be best known for its ornate, gold-domed cathedrals and its party scene than its gastronomic offerings, but there is plenty to eat and enjoy in this fascinating city.
Here are three dishes that you absolutely must taste the next time you’re in Kyiv.
Borscht
You’ll probably never forget the appearance or taste of this quintessential staple of Ukranian cuisine. Borscht is a beet-red soup that typically contains lamb and beef when served in Kyiv and contains a distinctive sour and savory flavor that you have to try to believe.
Vareniki
Almost every country in Central and Eastern Europe has its own version of boiled dumplings, and Ukraine’s version is known as vareniki. Typically consumed with sour cream, these dumplings are often filled with potato, meats, or cottage cheese. You might even find dessert versions which are filled with fruits!
Golubtsi
Ukranian cabbage rolls are one of my absolute favorite dishes to eat while in Kyiv. Filled with a mixture of rice, meat, and vegetables, they’re topped in a mouth-watering tomato sauce that you are going to fall in love with.
