Homemade Shawarma Pita Pockets

If you’re looking for a simple and delicious Middle Eastern-inspired dish, you’ve come to the right place! Shawarma is vastly eaten across the Middle East, and can be made using lamb, turkey, chicken, or beef. This recipe uses boneless chicken thighs, and is sure to delight your friends and family! Keep reading for this simplified version of Shwarma.

Ingredients

  • 3-4 pounds of skinless boneless chicken thighs
  • Juice of one lemon
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Sweet paprika
  • Garlic
  • Coriander
  • Sumac
  • Fresh Pita
  • Homemade (or store bought) tahina, lettuce, tomato, pickled onions

Instructions

  • Combine your spices, chicken, and lemon juice and marinate in the refrigerator for an hour or 2
  • Place your chicken in a greased bread loaf pan and layer the chicken on top of each other
  • Bake in the oven at 375 degrees for about 45-60 minutes
  • Once the chicken is cooked through, invert the chicken onto a cutting board and slice into pieces
  • Cut pitas in half and grill on the stove for a few minutes on the east side until warm and crispy
  • Place chicken into pita pockets, and drizzle homemade tahina and other toppings into the sandwich and enjoy!
