Homemade ice cream can seem like a big hassle, but it’s definitely worth the effort. In fact, the more time and effort you put into making ice cream from scratch, the tastier it will be. But all your efforts will be pointless if you don’t have a good recipe on hand, and the one below is just perfect.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 2 ounces semisweet chocolate
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Don’t forget to make your ice cream the night before so it has time to chill!
  2. Combine the sugar, milk, salt, and cocoa powder in a saucepan on medium heat to simmer, but don’t let it boil. Stir constantly.
  3. Beat the egg yolks lightly and add 1/2 cup of the hot liquid to them, stirring all the time, then return everything to the saucepan.
  4. Heat until it thickens without boiling it.
  5. Add chocolate and let it melt, then stir until even.
  6. Pour into a previously chilled bowl and refrigerate for a few hours.
  7. When completely chilled, stir in the cream and vanilla extract, then pour into an ice cream maker. Freeze according to the directions on your ice cream maker.
