Making your own nut milk at home is a simple, satisfying process that gives you a fresh, customizable alternative to store-bought varieties. Two benefits of making it at home? Your milk will be free from preservatives and added sugars, and you can experiment with different nuts and flavors for your perfect glass of milk. Here’s a quick guide.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup raw nuts of your choice
  • 2-4 cups water (for soaking)
  • 4 cups fresh water (for blending)
  • Sweeteners or flavorings (optional): vanilla extract, dates, honey, or maple syrup

Equipment:

  • High-speed blender
  • Nut milk bag or cheesecloth
  • Large bowl
  • Airtight container for storage

Instructions

  1. Cover nuts with 2-4 cups of water in a bowl. Soak the nuts overnight or for 4-8 hours to soften and enhance blendability. This will result in a creamier milk.
  2. After soaking, drain and rinse the nuts. Blend them with 4 cups of fresh water for 1-2 minutes until smooth. If you prefer a sweeter milk, add vanilla, dates, or any other sweeteners blend again.
  3. Strain the mixture through a nut milk bag or cheesecloth into a bowl, extracting the liquid nut milk. And that’s it! Store the milk in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days, shaking well before each use.
