Most dog owners and lovers probably know that human food is generally not good to give to dogs. While it might be okay to sometimes share a piece of unwanted meat or a small bit of cheese with your canine companion, there are some things that you should definitely take care not to let him have. Here are some foods that you definitely shouldn’t let your dog consume.

Chocolate

Dogs are highly intolerant of all types of chocolate, which contain a chemical compound called theobromine which doesn’t cause adverse effects in humans. It can, however, cause cardiac arrest in dogs due to their inability to metabolize the chemical.

Grapes and Raisins

While they might seem like a good, bite-sized treat for your pup, grapes and raisins can cause them to become seriously sick. Scientists still don’t know why, but ingesting grapes or raisins can cause dogs to experience kidney failure.

Cherries

Humans know not to eat the pits or stems that are part of a cherry, but dogs don’t. This can be dangerous because they contain cyanide, a poison that can severely affect their bodies if consumed.

Xylitol

Xylitol is a sugar substitute that’s sweet when used in place of the real thing in desserts and gums. However, since dogs’ bodies are fooled by the compound into thinking that it’s real sugar, insulin production can cause them to go into hypoglycemic shock if they consume xylitol.
