Key lime pie is a classic American dish that gets its name from the specific kind of limes it uses that hail from the Florida Keyes. The pie has been around since at least the early 20th century and has only gotten better since. Key lime pie is tart, sweet, and has amazing textural contrasts. Making your own at home is actually really simple and you don’t need that many ingredients!

Ingredients

For the pie, you will need graham crackers, butter, sugar, condensed milk, egg yolks, and the zest and juice from Key limes. However, if you live in a place where you can’t find Key limes or they’re really expensive, you can easily substitute with regular limes and it won’t make much difference.

Method

  1. Crumble up the graham crackers in a food processor or by hand until they are a fine dust.
  2. Combine the sugar and melted butter with the graham crackers and put it in a pie mold. Bake and then let cool.
  3. Pour the condensed milk into a bowl with the egg yolks and whisk. Add in the lime juice and zest and mix.
  4. Pour the custard into the crust and bake until just set.
  5. Wrap it in plastic wrap and continue to set it in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
  6. Dollop on whipped cream and enjoy!
