When you are vegan or lactose intolerant, butter can be a tricky thing to find. There are plenty of types of vegan-butters and margarines on the market, but sometimes they can have a lot of chemicals and additives that no one wants in their food. Instead, make your own at home! This recipe only requires one main ingredient and a food processor, so you have no excuse not to try it. And once you do, you’ll never go back.

To make this vegan butter, you will need several cups of unsweetened shredded coconut. It’s important that it’s unsweetened or the butter will come out tasting funny. All you need to do is pour the coconut flakes into a food processor and processor for 8-10 minutes. Make sure to scrape down the sides of the food processor every so often so that all the flakes are getting processed. You also need to use a food processor and not a blender because a blender will send the flakes flying up instead of around the blade. Once the butter has become creamy and slightly more liquidy, you can add things like salt, vanilla extract, honey, or herbs. Use this butter as you would normal butter.
