How to Make Festive Sufganiyot (Hanukkah Donuts)

If you’re looking to get into the joyous and bright holiday of Hanukah, spin the dreidel, and throw Hanukkah parties, then this Hannukah donuts recipe is for you! Commonly referred to in Israel and in the Jewish world as “Sufganiyot,” this delicious and oily treat is a staple during Hanukkah. Keep reading for a recipe that is sure to delight your guests.

Ingredients:

1 C warm water
1 tbsp active yeast
3 C flour
¼ tsp powdered sugar
¾ salt
½ tsp nutmeg
Two egg yolks
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
Filling: jelly, Nutella, lemon curd, pudding
Extra powdered sugar for coating

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, let water and yeast sit for 5 minutes. Do not mix!
  • Combine flour, salt, nutmeg, and powdered sugar in a large mixing bowl.
  • Add egg yolk, oil, and vanilla to the yeast mixture and whisk until thoroughly combined.
  • Add dry ingredients to the liquid and stir with a rubber spatula. (once the mixture is
    combined, it should be sticky.)
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit for 1-2 hours.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and pat dough into a rectangle about ¼ inch
    thick and 10-12 inches long.
  • Using a biscuit cutter, make 24 pieces of dough
  • Deep fry in vegetable oil until golden brown.
  • Once cooled, use a flavor infuser to inject your filling of choice, coat in powdered sugar, and enjoy!
