  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon fine salt
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon white distilled vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 1 pound cream cheese, softened
  • 2 sticks butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar


  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and prepare two 9-inch cake pans with oil and flour. 
  2. Sift flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder into a bowl. In another bowl, mix oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla with an electric mixer. 
  3. Combine the dry and wet ingredients until smooth. 
  4. Evenly distribute the batter into the pans and bake for 30-40 minutes. Let the cakes cool. 
  5. For the frosting, beat cream cheese, butter, vanilla, and sugar until creamy. 
  6. Assemble the cake with frosting between layers and on top and sides. Refrigerate for an hour before serving and enjoy.
