Smoothies are often hailed as one of the healthiest foods on the market, but the grim reality is that they’re just as healthy as you make them. It all comes down to picking the right ingredients, starting with the liquid base, but which is the best possible option for you?
Water
If you want your smoothie to be as healthy as it gets, you can’t go wrong with the water. It contains zero calories so it basically can do no harm to your smoothie, but it comes with one tiny downside. Water doesn’t add any flavor to your smoothies, either, so you should consider mixing it up with other liquids.
Milk
Your smoothies will have a much better taste and creamier texture if you add some milk to the mix. Its main downside is that it also ups the fat content of your smoothies, and that’s why many people opt for healthier plant-based alternatives, including soy and almond milk.
Juice
Juice is one of the most polarizing smoothie add-ins out there, and it’s not difficult to see why. Unless you’re using fresh juice, your smoothie will end up loaded with sugar, and that’s why commercially produced juices don’t make for a good smoothie liquid base.
