Making perfect boiled eggs is sure a lot more complicated than it seems. It seems that boiling eggs is always one huge gamble; you never know what you’ll get. One time they can turn out great, and the next time you end up disappointed.

If you want to avoid this and move the odds in your favor, check out these simple tips.

Use Older Eggs

It might go against the logic, but older eggs are actually better for boiling than fresh eggs. This is because the egg white shrinks as the egg gets older, allowing more space between the egg and the shell once it’s boiled. This way, you’ll have an easy peel every time.

Don’t Use Cold Eggs

If you are set on boiled eggs for breakfast, take them out of the fridge about a half hour prior to boiling them. Eggs at room temperature will deliver more consistent results regardless of whether you aim for a soft boil, medium boil, or hard boil.

Boil the Water First

One mistake people often make is placing the eggs in the water and then bringing them to a boil. You should always bring the water to a boil first and then lower the eggs. You’ll have an easier peel this way while knowing exactly how much time the egg needs to be boiling for perfect results.

Keep the Timer On

Leave eggs too long in the water, and they will be overcooked. Take them out too soon, and they cook properly. This is why you should always time your boiled eggs. Boil the eggs for about six minutes for a soft boil and 12 minutes for a hard boil.
