Making your own falafels is great fun and with this unique and flavorful take on the classic Middle Eastern dish you can embark on a culinary adventure. These falafels boast a delightful twist that will elevate your taste experience. Here’s a recipe for how to make them.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of canned chickpeas
  • 1/2 cup of chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/2 cup of chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 small red onion
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons chickpea flour or all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Tahini sauce or yogurt sauce for serving

Instructions

  1. In a food processor, combine chickpeas, cilantro, parsley, red onion, garlic, lemon zest, cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Pulse until the mixture reaches a coarse texture.
  2. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and add chickpea flour (or all-purpose flour) to bind the ingredients together. Mix until you can easily form a ball with the mixture. If it’s too dry, add a little water; if too wet, add more flour.
  3. Form the mixture into small balls or patties, about 1.5 inches in diameter.
  4. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Fry the falafels until golden brown on all sides, ensuring they are cooked through.
  5. Place the falafels on a paper towel to absorb excess oil. Serve the falafels hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as tahini or yogurt sauce. Or put them in a pita for an authentic experience.
