Homemade sushi is unbelievable and cannot be compared with shop-bought stuff. It’s not as difficult as you might think either! Here’s a recipe to make your own sushi and some suggested fillings.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of sushi rice
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup of rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Sushi-grade fish (could be salmon or tuna or something else)
  • Fresh vegetable fillings (common ones are avocado, carrot, or cucumber)
  • Seaweed sheets
  • Soy Sauce

Instructions

  1. Rinse your sushi rice until the water runs clear. Cook your sushi rice according to the instructions. Once the rice is cooked and still warm, mix in your sugar, salt, and rice vinegar, before allowing to cool.
  2. Slice your fish into thin, bite-sized strips. Cut your vegetable fillings into small matchstick pieces.
  3. You will need a bamboo sushi rolling mat for this step. Once you have yours ready, cover it in plastic wrap. Lay one of your seaweed sheets on the mat, shiny side down. Wet your hands to reduce stickiness and place your rice over your seaweed sheets. Arrange your fish and vegetable combinations along the bottom edge of the rice.
  4. Lift the edge of the mat and begin rolling your seaweed and rice over your filling. Once it has formed a cylinder, wet the top border of the seaweed in order to seal. Using a sharp knife, slice your rolled sushi into bite-sized pieces. Repeat this process until you have enough sushi pieces, and enjoy!
