Soft And Savory Shakshuka

Shakshuka is a wildly popular egg dish consisting of tomato sauce, eggs, and various spices that is served for breakfast, lunch, and dinner across the Middle East. The dish is simple, hearty, and delicious, and will fill you up for several hours. Keep reading for a tasty and quick recipe that you and your guests will love!

Ingredients

  • 2-6 eggs (depending how many people you’re serving)
  • 2 tbsp of tomato paste
  • 1 red pepper
  • 1 onion
  • 2 Tsp of smoked paprika
  • 1 Tsp of cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cayenne – or to taste based on spice tolerance
  • Zaatar to taste
  • Handful of fresh herbs (Parsley or Cilantro)
  • Tablespoon of olive oil

Instruction

  • Heat your oil in a nonstick skillet or frying pan.
  • Add your spices on low heat and cook until fragrant.
  • Thinly slice your onions and peppers and cook until soft.
  • Add your tomato paste and add some water on the sides of the pan and mix the spices, peppers, and paste into a sauce.
  • Let the sauce cook for a few minutes until bubbling.
  • Crack your eggs into the sauce, and let them cook covered on a low flame until desired consistency.
  • Garnish with fresh herbs and zaatar.
  • Serve with a slice of fresh hot pita to soak up the sauce and enjoy!
